What is a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner?

A Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner is a registered nurse prepared at the masters or doctoral level, specializing in psychiatric mental health care across the lifespan. Our specialized training provides expertise in both psychotropic medication prescription and supportive individual psychotherapy.

Hi, I'm Jean Sterry

DNP, RN, PMHNP-BC

I'm a psychiatric nurse practitioner with a doctorate of nursing practice. In practical terms this means I have a variety of tools to offer clients seeking support for their mental health. I take an evidence-based and conservative approach to prescribing medicine that limits unwanted effects and works to identify the lowest effective therapeutic doses. I provide individual therapy within a holistic framework that emphasizes interactions between biology, psychology, and social context and focuses on lifestyle and community as core components of healing and wellness.

I believe people are doing the best they can at any given moment. As such, I take a strengths-based approach to supporting clients as they build a more connected and authentic life by expanding their insight, self-compassion and resilience. I believe that compassion, curiosity, empathy and authenticity are the foundation of a strong and safe therapeutic relationship and that this relationship is the cornerstone of all therapeutic work.

My style is warm, validating and sincere, often peppered with nerdy metaphors, book recommendations and pet stories. I enjoy working with individuals and families across the lifespan with a special interest in supporting adolescents, young adults and parents. I have experience with clients experiencing symptoms related to mood, anxiety, OCD, trauma, grief and neurodiversity.

I have a background in inpatient pediatric nursing. I am a mom to a sweet, snuggly toddler and distinguished older dog. When not in clinic, you’ll find me biking, trail running or splashing in a river with my kiddo and partner, cooking and/or eating something delicious, and - if I’m really lucky - ending the day curled up with a good book and great music.

Practice Philosophy and Approach

Healing happens in relationship, and I am committed to creating a safe and supportive space in which clients can be their most authentic selves. My approach to care is trauma-informed, person-centered, and collaborative. I am queer-affirming and work within the Health At Every Size© paradigm to dismantle weight stigma and fat phobia. My practice is built upon the understanding that the contexts and systems in which we live profoundly impact our well-being, that clients are the experts in their own lives, and that growth and recovery are possible for everyone. I am a life-long learner, which includes my own ongoing anti-oppression work and focus on evidence-based individualized care. I am grateful for the opportunity to be a part of my clients' lives and support them in their pursuit of growth, learning, and transformation.
