Get to Know Us
The good life is a process, not a state of being. It is a direction, not a destination (Carl Rogers). Growth and recovery happen in relationship. At Sterry Psychiatric, we work in collaborative partnership with adolescents, families and individuals to provide relational, person-centered and evidence-based mental health care.
Our Services
Comprehensive Assessment
The first several visits consist of a thorough psychiatric evaluation during which we'll build an initial sense of trust and relationship. We will develop an understanding of what's not working, how it got that way, and where to go from here. We will discuss possible diagnoses and tools to support your mental wellbeing, and collaborate on a treatment plan that works with your unique strengths and skills to help you move towards change and growth.
Medication
Management
Our minds and bodies are not separate; our mental health impacts how we care for our bodies, our physical health impacts our mental wellbeing. Psychotropic medication is one of many tools we use to support mental well-being. Decision-making around medications is collaborative and rooted in the most current evidence with the intention of maximizing benefits while limiting risks and unwanted effects. Follow up visits include ongoing evaluation of medications to ensure they remain safe and effective.
Psychotherapy
For many clients, the deeper understanding of self and development of additional tools that occurs in psychotherapy supports the ongoing work of building a life they're excited to live. Supportive individual psychotherapy drawing from
interpersonal, dialectical and cognitive behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, and motivational interviewing form the foundation of our practice.
Hi, I'm Jean Sterry
DNP, RN, PMHNP-BC
I'm a psychiatric nurse practitioner with a doctorate of nursing practice.
In practical terms this means I have a variety of tools to offer clients seeking support for their mental health. I take an evidence-based and conservative approach to prescribing medicine that limits unwanted effects and works to identify the lowest effective therapeutic doses. I provide individual therapy within a holistic framework that emphasizes interactions between biology, psychology, and social context and focuses on lifestyle and community as core components of healing and wellness.
I am currently accepting new clients. I conduct sessions both in-person and by telehealth.
Practice Philosophy and Approach
Healing happens in relationship, and I am committed to creating a safe and supportive space in which clients can be their most authentic selves. My approach to care is trauma-informed, person-centered, and collaborative. I am queer-affirming and work within the Health At Every Size© paradigm to dismantle weight stigma and fat phobia. My practice is built upon the understanding that the contexts and systems in which we live profoundly impact our well-being, that clients are the experts in their own lives, and that growth and recovery are possible for everyone. I am a life-long learner, which includes my own ongoing anti-oppression work and focus on evidence-based individualized care. I am grateful for the opportunity to be a part of my clients' lives and support them in their pursuit of growth, learning, and transformation.
